A female reader, anonymous, writes (4 February 2010):

It is okay to use soap once a day... regular soap too. Just don't overdo it. Use a little lather instead of scrubbing yourself raw. It does not cause any problems -contrary to what a couple of posters are suggesting.

I have never had any problem ever... washing with regular soap and water every day for 38 years.

And no, washing only with water, hoping that it will clean itself, will mean that you will smell occasionally - not a good state to be in.

I am sure you have been washing all your life too :) So continue staying clean. When you have your period too... Use a bucket or a shower instead of a tub. Don't hesitate to touch yourself to stay clean even when you have a period.

Take showers instead of baths so you don't have to wash yourself in bloody water... And whenever you wash down there, period or no period, never use regular soap. Use only water, but if you really feel like you want a deeper clean (the area down there does clean itself actually) then buy a soap designed specifically for intimate wash. These are NOT the same as soaps for sensitive skin.

A female reader, k_c100 United Kingdom +, writes (4 February 2010):

k_c100 agony auntJust to add something here - dont use soap or perfumed shower gel to wash yourself down there! It will cause a PH imbalance and that can cause things like Thrush.

It is best to wash yourself down there with either just water or a specially designed shower gel with a neutral PH which is meant for women (I know in the UK they sell them so I'm sure there is an equivalent where you are).

I hope this helps and good luck!

veronika agony auntDon't listen to your friend, because it sounds like she has no idea what she's talking about.

You should wash your pubic region every time you have a shower, which I presume is daily for you. This includes when you're on your period.

Not My Name agony auntHaving your period is all the more reason to wash. Bathe or shower as you normally would, and you might even like to do it more often in a day than usual(esp if using pads) to feel fresher.
