A reader, anonymous, writes (14 June 2017):

Your husband caught them and got treated. If you confront him about it, he can blame you.

The only way you'd catch them on a toilet seat or from clothing; is if you wore his infested underwear, or were sitting on his lap cowgirl-style while he was on the toilet.

You caught them from him. The other possibilities given have a very low probability rate. They cling to the hair-shaft in pubic hair and lay their sticky eggs there.

He's quite clever. He got himself treated for deniability.

How well did you examine the specimen? They're pretty small so perhaps you confused it with something else... a tick perhaps or a body louse (which is different but closely related to the crab louse and lives pretty happily in public hair but prefers to lay its eggs in clothes.... have you borrowed anyone's clothes lately?

CindyCares agony aunt Pubic lice are generally transmitted through sexual contacts, but it is possibile, although uncommon, to get them through contact with bedsheets, towels, or other induments ( lingerie, swimming suits .. ) etc. recently used by an infested person.

That you can get them by using a public toilet is a popular urban legend , because , luckily, the pesky little beasts do NOT jump, and one would need to rub their pubic area against the toilet seat to get them this way.

A male reader, Been there Now over it United States +, writes (13 June 2017):

There's quite a bit on the internet about this. Here's one of the first statements....

"Crabs: Slang for pubic lice, parasitic insects that can infest in the genital area of humans. Pubic lice are usually spread through sexual contact. Rarely, infestation can be spread through contact with an infested person's bed linens, towels, or clothes."

The key word here is "rarely." It is possible. I've heard that hotel rooms, gyms and public rest rooms are possibilities.

A male reader, anonymous, writes (13 June 2017):

"You can get them by sleeping in a bed, wearing clothes or even from sitting on a toilet seat that the crabs live on."

and

"Pubic lice usually are spread through sexual contact and are most common in adults. Pubic lice found on children may be a sign of sexual exposure or abuse.

Occasionally, pubic lice may be spread by close personal contact or contact with articles such as clothing, bed linens, or towels that have been used by an infested person.

A common misconception is that pubic lice are spread easily by sitting on a toilet seat.

This would be extremely rare because lice cannot live long away from a warm human body and they do not have feet designed to hold onto or walk on smooth surfaces such as toilet seats."
