But because of his situation(him being separated) I abruptly cut him off through text message, which left me feeling really bad. I didn't want to end up getting hurt in the long run. I feel like I made a mistake in being so cold and cutting him off the way I did and I kinda regret my decision. What can I do to get rid of this guilt? Should I apologize? Would he lose respect for me if I did that?

you should not have any guilt. why do you have guilt?
he's separated which means (at least in my state) that he's legally married.
now how long he is separated and what he was hoping to get out of your relationship may have bearing.
I was separated from my first husband 8 years... we had no chance of getting back together but did not see a need to divorce till he wanted to remarry.
so you met this guy online.. how long ago?
and you began talking on the phone... how long ago?
is he local? if so why didn't you meet?
if he's not local how far away is he?
how long ago did you cut him off?
