They mean the same thing to me. Although caring for someone reminds me of a nurse or something like that. Caring about someone is more emotional oriented in my opinion. It depends on the person and their lexicon as well.
It's best to think of the simple answer when it comes to what guys say. It's very rarely a cover for something else.
