He may have a personality disorder, it could be a bad home life, it could be insecurities and is projecting, but more than likely he is just being a boy. Still in transistion from child to adult and his personality is just trying to cope with the changes and hormones.
In any case this should be a warning sign to you. You could try to talk to him about it, but if the problem presists its best just to drop the relastionship until he is either more stable or the root of why has his outbursts.
