Because this dream about rats was so disturbing you have become very perceptive of anything to do with rats and where before you had the dream these incidences might still have occurred you were not as aware of them up until you had the dream.
Is there something eating you up inside that is possibly making you feel a little unworthy... something that is on your mind that you are keeping to yourself that is causing you tension? Dreaming of rats usually signifies guilt, envy or doubts about something. It could also mean that you have been betrayed by someone who has been a "rat" to you.
Nothing bad is going to happen to you and these sightings of rats are purely coincidental, simply because you are more aware because of your dream. Once you have sorted out what's on your mind and dealt with it you'll find this dream will subside, it's really only your subconscious working overtime and you have nothing to fear.

There are a lot of books out there which interpret dreams, but I prefer not to use them.I also have a lot of dreams like yours. I dream about people being ill, and the next day they are ill. I dream about somebody I haven't seen for years, and then suddenly I bump into them, or they contact me. So I know what you mean.Okay, this might sound silly, but it could be that you are a sensitive person, and intuitive. You might therefore have a slight gift for foretelling certain things or events. Perhaps you could look into this further, if it feels right for you.Or, another way to try and make sense of your dreams is to write them down. In particular, note the theme of the dream, how it felt, how you felt, the atmosphere, your gut reactions to the dream. I sometimes find that this can help me to understand the dreams, and myself, better.Good luck. x
