I am sick of him throwing a self pity-party

Question - (14 April 2010) 1 Answers - (Newest, 15 April 2010)
A female United States age 41-50, anonymous writes:

Sometimes my boyfriend does things that I have problems with, so I address them with him at an appropiate time. The problem with this is my boyfriend cannot handle hearing anything negative about himself. He does not try to work on me with any issues I have pertaining to him. He either does one of three things: a.) says how terrible he is and how bad he has it (asking for my sympathy and to build him up) .. b.) turns it into my problem (and gets very angry) or c.).. threatens suicide or moving to a foreign country to get away from it all. He will go on to say that no one appreciates, and how he does everything for everyone all the time and no one appreciates him.

I am sick of him throwing a self pity-party. No issue gets resolved when it comes to him. Anytime I bring anything up, he does one of those three things.

I do love him, but he does absolutely nothing to try to change or to work on anything I have issues with. What can I do???

A female reader, Emilysanswers United Kingdom +, writes (15 April 2010):

If he's talked of suicide then send him to a doctor. You are his girlfriend, not a mental health nurse, so tell him to get his illness dealt with or he's going to lose you.

Good Luck!! xx
