Usually when you start the 2nd pack you are supposed to be 99.9% protected. As for me it works great preventing pregnancy, but I am thinking about quitting it because of the side effects. I gained weight, but not in a bad way (my bobbs are a whole cup size bigger). At first I had 2 periods in one month, until I was on the 4th pack... and one time I missed my period (*which really scared me). But I can deal with all of this, what I cant deal with is the fact that I cant get horney that well anymore, and my face keeps on getting huge pimples that take forever to go away. Its gotten so bad that I hate being in front of my husband without makeup. I have tried 5 different pills, and none of them didnt make me break out. But remember the pill is different for everyone, so you can only be warned what you could expect. supposedly if you are not happy with the results by the third pack then you are supposed to keep on trying different ones until you find the one that works best for you, but in my case I am going to stop to save my face from getting any worse. GOOD LUCK!!!

You need to sit down with the doctor and ask him/her about issues such as:
*blood pressure, sometimes it can increase
*acne, some pills can change your hormone levels and impact on your skin
*weight, some girls put on weight when the go on the pill
*ability and effect of "skipping periods" - one of my friends who is on the pill and has been for years still cannot skip periods, even when she just takes the sugar tablets, her period still comes
*mood changes
*cost - there can be a dramatic difference between the cost of pills
As your doc will have your history in front of them (ie blood pressure) they will be able to discuss possible side effects and which pill is best.
They will also be able to explain the reliability of the pill when it comes to sex as well.
