 I admit I'm not a big fan of anal myself, I much prefer to spend 100% of time in the environs of god's greatest gift to humanity.
Having said that from discussions with male friends/colleagues the usual response is because its a tight hole. I believe for the majority ( i.e those without a particular sexual fetish ) its as simple as that. The sensation after a few minutes wears off ( particulary for condom wearers ) so the tighter hole provides a new avenue as it were.

Yes, obviously, a male and another male cannot have vaginal penetration, so they proceed with anal penetration, hand job, and blow jobs, and other sexual activities unsaid.
Anal penetration, like any other sexual activity is a form of pleasure. It's like asking, "Why does Jane like position A and why does Sandra enjoy doing B?"
