I am an illegal immigrant. How do I deal with it?

A female United States age 36-40, anonymous writes:

I'm a Belgian woman who's been in the US since August 2003 now, came in on a tourist visa, never went back.

My family know although they're concerned about this.

I came here for holiday, but eventually got under-the-table work at a McDonald's and then a showroom selling bathrooms and bathroom equipment, and some local rich couple allowed me to live in an apartment they'd bought for me. Apparently the rich lady found out from a friend-of-a-friend that I was here as an illegal immigrant.

I still get paid cash in hand for working as a saleswoman.

Normally you think illegal immigrants to the USA are Mexicans or similar. But not this lady, me.

I'm now 43, and came here aged 24.

I did something illegal, yeah, but at the time, I was young, free and single.

Well, I'm not now, living with my girlfriend of 8 years.

But it's easier to be lesbian in the USA than conservative Europe. Especially here in California.

I'm not a US citizen obviously and won't qualify due to obvious reasons.

But I feel more comfortable here and don't really want to be deported.

I don't want to go back to Europe. I like it here.

I suppose I got to do what's best for me.

How do I deal with this situation? It's only recently guilt has started to get to me.

Is your girlfriend American? Why not marry her? Then you can legally apply for citizenship.

What's happened recently to make you start worrying about it after nearly 10 years?

A female reader, anonymous, writes (25 May 2022):

You can't carry on living illegally in the US. Speak with a lawyer about your rights and how you might be able to qualify to live there. I'm sure Belgium has also changed since you grew up there so I wouldnt rule out the possibility of moving back.

A female reader, anonymous, writes (24 May 2022):

Get a lawyer. Only a qualified professional can give you advice you can use.

You need to solve this. Living illegally anywhere is such a stress. Not to mention if something happens to you. You're not getting any younger.
