I've been through the adoption process and had said that I didn't mind what skin colour my child would have as me and my family have never found it important. The agency have got back to me that there is a mixed race girl who is 2 years old and they think she'd do well in my family. I'm thrilled and my family are delighted! Now I'm nervous though because I'm not sure how to take care of and style Afro hair. I don't want to talk to the agency about it, in case they think I'd be unfit, so does anyone know websites that teach you how to do it? Please I'm desperate!! Reply to this Question Share |

SVC is correct. Afro is not a type of hair, it's a STYLE of hair.
I would wait till you met the baby and then consider looking for a good hairdresser who is black. And I don't say that to sound silly, but I have found that in the US, MOST black hairdressers can do European, Asian and African hair types and all the inbetween types, better than most white hairdressers.
Two of my good friends have children of mixed hereditary and one has straight hair and the other very very tight little curls. I know the mom of the second child ( the tight little curls) treat her scalp and hair with coconut oil, because her scalp and hair tends to dry out a lot. And she ONLY uses conditioner (no shampoo) for cleaning her hair (you can google co-wash - and that works for any hair type, I use it myself.)
If you want to learn how to braid her hair in some of the fantastically pretty ways I'd look on YouTube. Like SVC said google can help A LOT.

Hi there,
It all depends on the hair. I'm biracial, but I have very soft, fine hair that has curls. So, a less PC version of describing my hair would be "white" hair with "black" curls.
She could have a coarser, oily hair, or maybe a dry, rough hair. Her hair might be straight, or wavy, or curly. She might have hair like mine, or she might have hair like yours. It really depends on her! I would recommend finding a good hair salon that specializes in all kinds of hair, and go get some recommendations for her hair type once she arrives.
Congratulations on adopting!
