And she walks up to his friend to say 'hello' and make small chit chat (while the guy crush is nearby in the room). When she starts talking to the friend, he looks down to the ground and kinda looks over to his friend (the crush) and kinda has a small smirk on his face and looks back down...doesn't make much eye contact but still continues to chat with the girl. Why would he look over at his friend (the crush) like that? Is it possible he KNOWS that his friend likes the girl? It's all very subtle but the girl definitely notices it and wonders why he reacted that way when she approached the friend to say hello and be friendly.

To kind of help set the friend up with you, especially if he is feeling shy. The reaction you refer to sounds more like they are well aware that you like this guy, they've probably had a conversation or two about it. And perhaps joked about it, cause that's how guys are. He was probably looking down, and avoiding eye contact, to prevent from laughing from perhaps some inside joke they have about it. Him glancing at your crush with a smirk, mid conversation seems more like an, "aha!" sort of look. Maybe they figured you were talking to this friend in order to get close to your crush. And their body language was their way of calling you out to themselves. That's what it seems like to me. They seem to have an awareness of you. But it's not quite clear if its one sided or if this guy actually shares in your sentiment.

Often folks THINK that their attraction is not obvious.
It usually is apparent if someone has a crush on another person.

OR it's possible the crush knows that the girl has a crush on him and the crush has said something to his friend about it.
