How to make a somewhat long-distance relationship work out?

A female United States age 30-35, anonymous writes:

My boyfriend and I have been dating for about two months now, and we live 2 1/2 hours apart so it has been kind of hard. We usually get to see each other on the weekends, but occasionally have to skip one or two. It has been kind of hard on our relationship, so I was just wondering if anyone who is or has been in a similar situation has any advice on how to make the relationship work or run more smoothly because I want it to work out. Thanks!

A female reader, anonymous, writes (6 May 2009):

You don't say how much contact you have between the weekends but it would be good to text, phone and email each other.

You don't say why some weekends aren't possible. If you both have lives and other friends then that is healthy. If you are both with other friends then eventually you could meet each other's friends. That doesn't happen overnight though, so give it time.
