How to live with the pain of a breakup?

A female Costa Rica age 30-35, *ca9130 writes:

I have been with my bf for nine months and I really love him and I know he loves me too, maybe even more, but we have a serious communication problem. Basically, it's a screaming contest and he is the one that begins and sometimes he insults my thoughts and ideas. I have seen him talk to his family and I know he is kind of verbally abusive and when we have an argument it turns into a fight. He broke up with me yesterday because he said that we don't have anything in common and that everything got out of control. Still, I feel that if we could get counseling or try really hard to control our emotions, we could really pull it off because there is real chemistry between us and love, plus the things we differ about each other's way of thinking seems to me like a ridicolous excuse, because it's not that we have nothing in common, but that he makes a very big deal about it and I feel like he scolds me for thiking about somethings the way I do. Anyways, I'm not planning in calling him back ever, only if he calls (I feel he will, many friends and family think so too). He still has to give me some money I lent him so he would pay a debt he has, so what should I do if he tries to bring me back or the opposite, if he doesn't? How should I live with the pain.
