i read somewhere that your safe and can avoid pregnancy by using it upto 99% but there is still that 1% of failure. sometimes in the middle of the action it mite tear.
so its not 100% safe.

Condoms are pretty safe. However, there's nothing worse than pulling out and finding the raincoat missing!
In other words don't hang around inside too long after you cum. Once your erection fades you could leave it inside.

Generally, a condom is 99% effective if you are using it properly (leaving a little room at the end so there's room for the semen, making sure you are using the right size, avoiding the exotic ribbed ones that are more likely to tear, etc), but that still leaves you a chance of getting pregnant. If you're also on the Pill (also very effective), then you can end up roughly 99.9% effective if you take the Pill properly (never miss a day, always take it at the same time each day, know that antibiotics will prevent the Pill from working).
While a condom is good, two protections are better.

Mostly, because they use them wrong. It is only a thin piece of rubber and it sees a lot of action.
It is wise to be on the pill as well but for STD's they are the ONLY protection. Well, there is abstinence, but lets not kid ourselves.
How safe is it? A lot safer then without.

reader, anonymous, writes (9 October 2009): Condoms are about 98% effective if you use them properly. This means it needs to be on before the penis nears the vagina. If the penis is near the vaginal opening before it is covered, there is a chance that a woman can still become pregnant (from the pre-ejaculate liquid leaking from the penis). When using condoms and lubricant, you need to be careful to choose a lubricant that will not break down the material of the condom. For example, petroleum jelly can break down latex condoms.
There is a small chance that the condom you are using may fail. They have expiration dates on them, so make sure you are using one that is not too old.
It may have a hole in it, or it may fall off.
Overall, they are safe and easy to use. They are the best way to protect yourself from STD's and a very good way to prevent pregnancy.
