How much added protection does the pulling out method provide?

A female United States age 30-35, anonymous writes:

How much added protection does pulling out really provide? I went on the pill so we didn't have to bother with condoms anymore, but he insists on pulling out on top of that. Does that really help? It seems so unecessary to me. It's not very romantic having him ejaculate all over my stomach and breasts when we do it.

A male reader, anonymous, writes (22 November 2010):

A study in Boston, Massachusetts, and another study in New York City examined samples of pre ejaculate fluid from HIV seropositive and HIV seronegative men to determine whether HIV was or was not present in pre ejaculate fluid.

The more significant finding, however, was that most pre ejaculate samples did not contain any sperm and those that did had only small clumps of a very small amount of sperm which seemed to be immobile.

Pre-ejaculate fluid of 6 of the 9 HIV seropositive donors in Boston and 6 of the 14 HIV seropositive donors in New York contained HIV, regardless of symptom status or antiretroviral therapy status.

Fourteen people from a limited subset of the population do not a study make.

Although it's obvious that the withdrawal method is most effective against pregnancy when it is used all the time and always used perfectly, perfect use hardly ever happens. The typical woman does not use the withdrawal method perfectly. If typical women use the withdrawal method, it is 81% effective. This means that if 100 women use the withdrawal method, but do not use it perfectly, at least 19 women will become pregnant in a year.

There are two kinds of couples that use the pullout method. Those that are parents, and those that will become parents.

Condoms and the Pill usually covers most of the bases.

The pull out method has to be the most unreliable form of contraception know to human-kind and it always was.

A reader, anonymous, writes (22 November 2010):

Yeah it does really help a lot and offers a lot more protection than the pill on its own.

Pre cum can have sperm in it but that's only really if he's already ejaculated beforehand.

On its own the pullout isn't very reliable but with the pill too it is a good idea. Should the pill fail because of antibiotic use or other such factors, then coitus interuptus will give a lot of extra security. Assuming it is done properly each time.

What he's doing is greatly decreasing the risk of pregnancy by pulling out and you being on the pill.

I wonder what his reasons are though, you don't say what they are. Most guys love to cum inside.

A female reader, chigirl Norway +, writes (22 November 2010):

chigirl agony auntIt provides a psychological reassurance basically. I doubt it will be possible to predict by percentage how much "protection" it gives, because look at the facts: Getting pregnant in the first place even if a couple is trying to get pregnant can in some cases take years. And, precum can have sperm in it, making ignorant teens pregnant all the time.

This all depends on fairly random factors: your fertility, his sperm quality, the time of the month, if he recently masturbated, luck, chance.

This is psychological, it's all in his head. Sure it MIGHT help. But if he's so nervous a condom helps much more.

It doesn't add any protection at all. Also, the pill will stop pregnancy but not STIs.

Sarahh._x agony auntIf he's that insecure I suggest the implant it's 99.9% affected the pull out method could fail stopping the pill and getting the implant is a wiser idea, in cases of you being ill unlike the implant it effects it.
