I'm just unaware of the whole process and would like to be a little more educated.thank you

I don't know about the US but in England we have the family law for that, they help you sort out arrangements for the children etc. If everything ends amicably and you can talk about what you both want then a divorce can happen fairly quickly. It can also depend on what your earnings are as to how much help you can get. Good luck

It varies state by state, country by country. My divorce included a 4 year long custody battle so took about 5 years total. it took me 3 years to pay for the danged thing. but who pays? EVERYBODY PAYS, the couple, their kids, their family members and friends, even their jobs. The only ones who benefit 100% from a divorce are the lawyers. In Illinois, child support costs 20% for the first kid and more for additional kids after that. Usually there's no spousal support beyond child support, but it depends on where you live and if you have a prenup and how much each partner worked & earned during their marriage.
Good luck, and pray often. Divorce can be terribly debilitating, even if you live apart and know that you're a bad match for each other. Divorce is the death of the marriage, and is often accompanied by Grief and the grieving process. 2-3 years after divorce, you'll hopefully get along better with your ex- and if you're lucky like me, you'll even enjoy seeing her moving on with her life as you've moved on with yours.
