A female United States age 30-35, anonymous writes:

This morning (feb 12th) I had sex... well last night too. Anyways I found online calendars that say my ovulation week starts tomorrow (feb 13th). Would I have any chance that I'll get pregnant? And I always hear different answers about how long sperm can last inside. I heard anywhere from 3 to 7 days. How long is it really?

Thanks guys

A reader, anonymous, writes (13 February 2011):

Given the most ideal conditions (ideal vaginal/uterine environments, fertile CM, strong sperm health, etc) sperm may be able to survive between six and seven days. That's about a quarter of a typical menstrual cycle - and that means an extended window of fertility before ovulation. In most cases, however, we can assume that there will be realistic factors that may decrease sperm longevity or inhibit sperm movement. First of all, the sperm need to get out of the vagina and into the uterus (through the cervix). If the sperm can't make that initial leg of the journey in a few hours, most will end up dead shortly thereafter. Now, if fertile-quality cervical mucus is present and abundant, and if the sperm make make it to cervix and the womb, then sperm life-span can be extended. FertileCM provides an effective means of improving the quantity and quality cervical mucus for precisely this purpose. On average, we can expect sperm to survive just a day or two, and given more optimum conditions or luckier happenstance, a handful of days more.

Long enough that you have reason to be concerned, esp. if you have been pregnant before.

If you have not and do not wish to have a baby, consider Plan B. I took it years ago and didn't get pregnant. No side effects for me, anyway.

If you want to be pregnant, then you have a good chance. If not, take action swiftly or ... not.

I'm sure that answer varies but I believe it can live up to 48 hours beyond ejaculation ...

... If you did not use protection and there were a few ejaculations, then you have good reason to be concerned.

have you ever been pregnant?

I have gotten pregnant 1) no protection but had my period in full force and effect, 2) with strict and consistent condom use with no known mishaps, 3) the former COUPLED with spermicide, and 4) with strict condom use when i was 39 years of age and "off cycle."

This is over a ten year period, each was a different partner.

Your ovulation period and the sperm inside you overlaps even by a few days, i think you have good reason to be concerned.

You are also very young which raises your risk factors; at least with me, my period varied significantly in my 20's, usually only by a day or two here or there, but it didn't come as consistently to the day as it did in my 30's and now, 40's.

One option is Plan B for you now -- I have taken it. You need to take it within 48 hours. I took it after a condom broke. I don't even know at what point in my cycle but with my history i called the dr. and he said yes get it, and i went to a pharmacy (no scrip needed) and got it, took and had no side effects and didn' get pregnant.
