How likely is it that I might be pregnant? I know the pill is not foolproof, so I am very worried.

A female United Kingdom age 30-35, *ortington writes:

Hi, I'm 19 and a university student. I have had problems with acne for a while and I am on the contraceptive pill Dianette to help with the acne.

Because I have it for acne my doctor never explained the contraceptive side of the pill. So how easy is it for me to get pregnant?

I've been with my boyfriend for 7 months, and we have had sex with and also without a condom because I am on the pill and I had monthly pregnancy tests (to do with another medication I was on). Last night he ejaculated during sex, without a condom. Tomorrow is the last day I am on the pill before my seven free days. I have not missed a pill.

How likely is it that I might be pregnant? I know the pill is not fool-proof, and so I am very worried. I know I am stupid to not use a barrier protection, and believe me I have learned my lesson. During the seven pill-free days are you unprotected? Because I have read that sperm can live inside you for up to a week.

Please, educate me!

Thank you so much to the people who replied. It's just this is not something I can go to my mother about, and I felt quite frightened and vulnerable.

You have put my mind at rest. Thank you.

A reader, anonymous, writes (17 February 2008):

Honey, millions of women use the pill to protect themselves from pregnancy because if used correctly it is one of, if not the most effective methods of contraception available. As long as you haven't missed any pills, taken any antibiotics that may affect it or been ill recently then you really do not have anything to worry about.

All the information about how the pill works and it's effectiveness should be contained in the leaflet in your pill box. If there isn't one, ask for one next time you pick up your prescription.

DoubleM agony auntWhile I do not feel knowledgeable enough to "educate you" about it, the pill is considered up to and better than 90 percent effective. Nothing is foolproof, or course. Yes, you are protected during the seven days off, as much as normally. You might add the slight amount of insurance of expelling as much serm as possible if it happens again. Just go sit on the toilet after and squeeze your muscles down below, similar to when urinating but more so. That does not prevent, but quite a bit of semen should remove and at least somewhat reduces the amount inside.

Thankfully, most older women with whom I'm likely to be with are beyond that, and I rarely have to worry about it.

I suppose you know about ovulation, which is the peak time you are prone to conceive. Avoid any activity likely to introduce sperm into your vagina three to four days before and after ovulation as well. Either take orally or by handjob or anything else that avoids vaginal penetration when not using a condom.
