Having unprotected sex is not a guarantee you will contract it. A man could have unprotected sex with a woman with HIV his entire life and not contract it. Although the chances of that are extremely slim it is still possible.
It is the same as any kind of infection it's never guaranteed, people have the wrong impression that if you have sex with a carrier once you get it. That's not true.
Just because something is possible doesn't mean it will happen every time. I saw a statistic about it before the chances are quite low for female to male transmission. Something like 1 in 15 encounters or something like that. But those stats aren't advertised for obvious reasons. HIV campaign groups think that telling people you get it from the first time is the best way to sell their message, which is fair enough because a lot of people would be stupid enough to take a chance.

Maverick, GREAT answer. Or just not.
Your friend's husband could be lying? Your friends husband could have used protection and so didn't catch it. HIV does not spread easily, yes you can get it from having sex with a HIV positive, or from getting their blood on an open wound you have, but if you are careful it is possible to NOT get it yourself. As well as HIV not spreading easily as well, you could have unprotected sex with a HIV positive and not get HIV. It is possible.
Your friend could have had HIV from birth. HIV like I said does not spread only through sexual contact. You should read up on that. It can spread from blood and from mother to child through birth.
I hope your friend gets good medical help when she will deliver her baby, to prevent the child from getting HIV as well.

People should not be so quick to allege that this poor woman was ever unfaithful to her husband. Such utter nonsense in many instances. And they demonstrate they do not fully realise how many ways that HIV can be contracted. If she gave assistance to a person (child or adult) who was bleeding and unknown to her had HIV and she had any kind of small cut on her hand she could get HIV. It is blood/bodily fluid cross contamination that can give a person HIV. That is why condoms are so important. And it is why nurses and doctors wear gloves around someone who is bleeding if they do not know if the person has HIV or not..Or she could have received an emergency blood transfusion when sick. And someone messed up and forgot to properly check the blood to be transfused and therefore HIV infected blood was given to a woman who previously did not have HIV.An unprofessional Nurse or Doctor, giving innoculations to patients, and trying to save money, reused a needle. The previous patient could have HIV. So if the Unprofessional Doctor or Nurse would then unwittingly give the next patient HIV because they reused a needle. When they should have used a new needle. If her mother had HIV she could have received it that way. But people can have few symptoms for a long while. Some babies are born with HIV. That is no reason to shun the mother nor the child. If a girl gave oral sex to a boy before she married or even after and swallowed from male ejaculated fluid, from a male who had HIV she could get HIV.But some people don't contract it as easily as other people do. Hence her husband has not yet contracted it. But he will if he does not use condoms.

Maybe she cheated on him. However i assumed that she got it before they got together and he still loved her enough to risk it

Her mom could have passed it to her but she would have noticed before now. She cheaated with someone who had it. Had a blood transfusion or got the blood of someone infected on.in her. You can only get it through blood or semen. not spit or sweat.

She's has two lovers or she been infected by a needle. It possible that he's actually positive but test neg. Hiv like many other virus can remain dominate, but pass the virus on to others. Hiv and other people has no effect and they never become sick nor do they need medication. They have drugs now that can help her and her unborn child. These drugs are prevent the unborn child from becoming sick. She need to seek and stay on those medications. Another possibility is transfer. A male can transfer fluids from one female to the next if he doesn't clean himself well especially if he not circumcised. Most STD's are effected if it get into ur blood stream and unless he has and open wound or sore he could have slept around with some that was effect and transferred it to his wife without infecting himself. If he cheats Don't have sex with him because once you do than you have had sex with all his sexual partners. Your a high risk candidate if your partners cheats.
