How does the pill work?

A female Australia age 30-35, *ervy writes:

Hey Aunts,

Just got the pill today from the doctor, and he told me to take it on the first day of my period - only question is, does that mean the active pill, or the inactive pill in the 'start' area of the packet (I realise that this is like taking no pill at all....)? I'm figuring it actually won't matter that much, considering I won't be having sex without protection for a while anyway, but I don't want to mess up my period (due now!) Sorry for the ignorance, I have heaps of information, but I'm just double checking!

Thanks in advance,

mervy.

Take the first ACTIVE pill on the first day of your period, then you will be protected and able to have sex wihtout getting pregnant from the day your period finishes... it might be a bit longer than normal this time, mine is when i change pills... or start a new one, but some peoples are really light... so up to your body to decide but dont worry either way! :D

mervy agony auntHaha, you're sure right Ebony, I wouldn't really want to have sex on my period anyway, but I figure since I'm so close to starting my period anyway, that I should start then if I can. So active pill on the first day of my period, right?

A female reader, EbonyBlossom United Kingdom +, writes (8 April 2010):

EbonyBlossom agony auntThe pill stops you from ovulating (releasing eggs.) It takes 7 days for the pill to take effect unless you take it on the first day of your period (then it becomes active immediately, but you wouldn't really wanna have sex on your period anyway would you?!) So basically unless you take your first pill on the first day of your period, then you should use a condom for the first week.
