writes: How do doctors check females for an std? Does it hurt? I'm not going for a check-up or anything, I don't need to, but I'm just curious. I've heard they insert a tube up a guy's urethra (spelling?) and that doesn't sound too pleasant! So what about a girl?

reader, anonymous, writes (24 April 2008): Just been to GUM clinic in Britian and had a full screen. Speculum in vagina, swab taken from cervics, no pain if you are relaxed. Swab taken from urethra (pee hole), which was a bit sore but over quickly. Blood test for HIV, not too bad. Urine collected as well. Over in a flash and results take 2 weeks to be ready, the wait is worse than anything else.
