We are reaching the point in our relationship where we are going to be taking things to the next level physically, but I am terrified of putting myself at risk for StDs/HIV.The problem is, it's an awkward situation. Just how does one go about asking them if they will get tested, both for their own health and mine? Thanks.

Honeypie has the answer. You tell him that you want to be careful, so you want to schedule a dual appointment for BOTH of you to get tested. Tell him you never take chances.

Well, you suggest to him that BEFORE you two get intimate you BOTH get a full STD + HIV panel done.
Getting yourself tested is a smart thing for several reasons, YOU have a sexual past, HE has a sexual past. And you are both old enough to know that it's the smart thing to do.
And I would suggest that if he refuses and claims he is clean you do not take the relationship further. Because he might THINK he is clean, because he WANTS to be clean - doesn't MAKE him clean.
Besides HVI he could have Hep C. So yea, no testing no sex. BE smart about your health.

Phrase it like that and there's no offence.
