How does one know when one is trying too hard?

I met a girl ona dating website just under a year ago, we've been talking all this time, and I'm absolutely crazy about her. She's the first girl I've really cared about since I seperated from my ex wife about 3 years ago.

We met up one afternoon just to chat, and it wasn't too bad, we had a laugh, and then went home. After a while, she told me she fels the same, and we sort of became exclusive. I eventually got an invite to her new years party, and stayed over, and while nothing physical happened, we had a great night, and I actually felt we could be really good. Her friends thought I was trying too hard, and was nly after one thing, so they don't really like me, but she's told me she likes me, and it's all good.

Over the past couple of months, it's just gone downhill, i'm getting such mixed signals it's driving me potty! She says she likes me, and thinks I'm great, but then doesn't answer the phone. Hardly ever txts anymore, and just doesn't seem to be around when I want to talk, even if it's just to ask how she is. I don't know if she feels i'm coming on too strong or anything. I've given her loads of chances to tell me straight what she wants, of if she wants to go forward, and she always does.

I guess my question is, how can you tell if it's going to go anywhere, when all you get is reassurance, followed by absence and mystery? How do you know if you're both onboard, or if I'm just holding on because I really like her, but terrified she just doesn't want to hurt me?

I've been thinking of that. I did it for a while, and she did come back, started writing, and genuinely wanted to get in touch, but as soon as I'm back there, she retrearts again. Lol, looks like a classic case of treat 'em mean :(

I guess your right, I should just back off, see if she closes the gap herself
