Hi I know this isn't a relationship question but I'm desperate for some help.

Its about my weight, I can't afford to join weightwatchers or slimmersworld etc or the gym for that matter because I've just lost my job. The thing is 2 years ago me and my best friend were both weighed in at 8 stone, both 5'3 and uk size 10, we both piled the weight on, me due to eatin more and her due to drinking more...we both went up to 9 stone.

Lately though she is starting to lose it again and I am desperate to join her,

I am finding it so diificult to shed any lbs though despite dieting for a week now- I've been living on fresh fruit and salad and even paid a one-day ticket in the gym to burn myself for a day.

Any advice on how to start losing this tone I've put on would be much appreciated.

Regards

Walking is free and so good for losing weight. Plus you get to see lots of places you may not have seen before. Make sure you invest in some good walking shoes and a shower-proof jacket. Seriously even 1 walking a day will help you shift the weight.

A female reader, anonymous, writes (10 July 2011):

The easiest way to get slim and fit is also the hardest -- live a slim and fit lifestyle. The keys are eating right and doing more.

This isn't the same as dieting and exercising. Dieting is eating special food, eating right is about having the right portions of the right foods at the right time. Exercising is about effort for the sake of it, doing more is effort with results.

The easiest way to eat right is to ensure that there are only right foods available. So have breakfast at home, pack a lunch, and plan out your evening meals before you do your weekly shopping. The mid-afternoon is the worst time, so make sure that you have something right at hand to fill the 3pm munchies.

Doing more is really just a matter of getting out of the house and out of the car. So plan your week's TV viewing and Internet use and turn it off when the show you want to see has finished. Make plans that don't use a car: you might walk to the local shops rather than drive to a shopping centre. Or leave for work earlier and ride a bike. Join a social sports group, there are plenty around, so try a few until you find a group of people you are comfortable with.

A female reader, chigirl Norway +, writes (10 July 2011):

chigirl agony auntYou need to give this more than a week! You didn't gain weight in just one week, and you won't lose it in just one week ether unless you stop eating completely.

A work-out doesn't have to to be done at the gym. Or with someone else holding your hand. Work out at home, jog around the block, do at home exercises. And give it time, it takes time to see results. Very simple at home exercises work though, I can promise you that. I once had a boyfriend who wanted to buff up, and he started by just doing push ups and sit ups each night before bed-time. Before a year was over he'd gotten close to a six-pack, got lovely chest muscles too, and moved on to buying weights, and eventually joined some gym or other. But it all started with plain and easy at home exercises. You can find them online by googling it.

Losing weight though happens mainly through cardio workouts. This means movement, such as walking, jogging, running, dancing, sweating. Even jumping up and down will make you drop weight. Look at marathon runners, they're just sticks. Use cardio exercise to drop the weight, and muscle group exercises to shape how you want your body to look (within the natural limits).

Tisha-1 agony auntA friend of mine dances around her house each morning for one hour. She puts on some fun music (anything, reggae, rock, pop, classical, whatever appeals that day) and simply starts to move.

There are thousands of videos on working out at youtube; find one that seems safe enough and follow along.

When I had to lose weight, I started off by walking. I had 2 other walking buddies and we met 3 times a week, rain or shine. Having them there waiting for me made me show up.

I found a great app for my smartphone and used it to track calories taken in and calories burned through various activities. It keeps you honest. There's one at livestrong.com

One thing to keep in mind is that if you go into starvation mode, by eating too few calories, your body will hang on to anything you eat and you won't see any results.

Think about having small healthy meals: a lean protein, a complex carbohydrate, fruit or veg and a healthy fat like olive oil, avocados, or almonds. Portion control is key, as is choosing nutritious food.

When you are on the phone, stand up and pace. No matter who you are talking to, stand up and walk around.

You don't need to spend any money to lose weight. Just move your body.

A female reader, aunt honesty Ireland +, writes (10 July 2011):

aunt honesty agony auntWell you need to keep it up, dieting for a week and going to the gym is not going to make a difference at all. You need to keep up a routine and in time you will notice changes. OK so you don't have the money to go to diet classes or to the gym that's fine you can do it on your own.

Make sure you eat three meals a day and don't snack in between except for fruit or raw veg. Eat plenty of fruit, veg, salad and things like chicken or salmon. Be careful with salad dressings because they are quite fattening. Just make sure to get in to a routine and eat three proper meals a day and try and make them all before 6pm in the evening. Try not to eat after this.

As for keeping fit. You don't need to spend money at all. If you want to tone up your stomach do sit ups everyday, if it is your legs well then do squats everyday and if it is your arms, fill up empty bottles of water and use them as weights. Also you can go out walking or jogging everyday. There is plenty of exercise you can do without spending a penny. Dancing is another good one, let yourself go and burn up those calories.
