OR a figure of intellectual reverence such as a literateur, artist or scientist. I tend to think about them obsessively for a few days, and look them up the net like crazy. I constantly think about how great that person is/was, and what it would be like if I could meet them, or fantasize about how it would be to be related to them, HOW damn lucky are the people who happen to be related to, for instance, Shakespeare or Tagore. Then I get frustrated and try to dig up dirt on them and when/if I do, it leaves me sad. Why does this happen? And how to get rid of this depressing tendency?

Well, the first step is to become aware of when you are obsessing. Then start to observe yourself as you obsess. Become aware of the thinking pattern. Watch yourself, become your own diagnostician.
I have a website that may help you take an objective look at your obsessive thinking patterns: http://moodgym.anu.edu.au/welcome
In the meantime, put on a rubber band around your wrist. Snap it whenever you notice yourself starting to obsess. A little aversion therapy but it may be enough to jolt you out of the rut you've worn in your thinking patterns.
