I wouldn't answer at all nor would I make any attempt to find out who they were. In a recent response to someone else I said that using a third party, or hiding your identity, is very unsettling to the person you're hoping to charm. They don't know if it's a test, a joke or an innocent mistake (in this case a wrong number).
This person expects you to reveal how you feel to someone too cowardly to reveal who they are.
If they like you that badly they can approach you in the open, like a normal person would.

reader, anonymous, writes (5 February 2012): My first thought is that it could be someone playing a prank, so i would proceed with caution because you dont know who you are texting. If it is a prankster, you dont want to embarrass yourself by taking the bait. I would just call the number and identify the person. If they dont answer the phone or cancel your calls, then you know it is someone up to no good.

reader, anonymous, writes (5 February 2012): Just ask who it is, if they respond with their name (and it is someone you know) you can go from there. I would be careful though, you never know who it could be/pretending to be. Don't text them if they aren't forthcoming with answers or it seems a bit dodgy.
