Help!

I've been friends with a girl that I really like for a long time, but I want it to become a relationship. A big problem is, is that she is my (male) best friend's sister. What should I do, and how would I know if she likes me the same way?

A male reader, anonymous, writes (26 May 2012):

I agree it would be good manners to ask his permission, but you are not living in the 50's. He isn't her father or yours, so his opinion should not really be a deciding factor.

If two people have feelings for each other and want to give a relationship a go, why should it matter if you are friends with one of her siblings?

I would agree to date and then inform the brother together. That way you have done him the courtesy of not going behind his back about it and given him the clear message that he just needs to step back and accept it.
