writes:Hi. I was married a few years ago to a man that used me for his green card to be allowed to live in the country. I don't know where this man is at, and haven't had contact with him in over 8 years. How do i find out if this marriage was even really legal?Also, I'm engaged at the time and if i go to file for a new license certificate (after I get divorced) will this marriage show up? I'm soo confused.

reader, anonymous, writes (19 September 2008): if you never divorced of that guy, you are still legally married. You need to consult a lawyer to do the divorce process, if you don't know from the guy in 8 years, the divorce process will be really simple, any lawyer can do it, but about if it shows up for the new marriage licence I don't know that part
