He is saying things about me to his friends behind my back. He is several years younger than me, so No I don't like him. What do I do? I'm afraid if I confront him that will give him more to talk about and make things worse!

 Just ignore him. If he is " several years younger than you " he must be still a CHILD !, and confronting a child or giving any importance to what he says it would be like shooting at flies with a cannon.
