I've been friends with a guy since middle school. We haven't talked much for a couple months because of some issues involving work, friends, and a fight. Today he told me that his dad died three days ago. i had no idea what to say to him.

What can I do to make him feel better?

A female reader, anonymous, writes (30 September 2010):

you dont necessarily need to say something to console him because you dont know how he feels but it must be quite painful. just be a shoulder to lean on and be someone he can trust and talk to if he wants (dont try and push him to talk) just hang out with him and try to do things with him to get his mind off his dad (i.e. things that dont reming him of his dad ex. if he and his dad went golfing dont do that. he will have painful memories and miss his dad more and make it even more real to him that his dad is gone)
