How do I accept compliments with confidence?

A male Singapore age 30-35, anonymous writes:

Dear cupids,

This is a little embarrassing for me to admit. I head a team of three people at work and I am a bit of a shy and awkward kind of person. Whenever we mess up I know to behave like I'm sorry. I just take it on the chin, accept responsibility, say I'm sorry and work on doing a better job next time. Probably because it genuinely flusters me when our work is not upto the mark.

But when we do good and we're being appreciated by senior management, the words don't come out. I just stand there and grin like an idiot.

What am I to do in this situation? Anything with having to say as few words as possible is preferred as I don't enjoy too many people looking and listening to me at once.

From a fellow man who also gets uncomfortable with compliments:

Don't worry too much. If you say that you grin like an idiot, I'm sure they know you're happy for their appreciation.

If you really do want to tell them that you're grateful, why not have a quick visit with the boss, while there's no one around, and tell them? Or send them a short e-mail?

But don't let it get you down- bosses don't expect a thank you for a thank you!

janniepeg agony auntThe best way to respond to compliments is to thank the management for training and acknowledge hard work among your team, that you can't do it without them. Lastly is to say that you would keep up with the good work as there's is always room for growth and improvement.
