Ok so I met this guy in a chat room he is 21 and I'm 16 I live in Ohio and he lives in NY. We really hit it off but I lied to him about having sex I told him Im a virgin today and he was like what have I not been honest with u and I was like I was just afraid u wouldn't like me. He says he likes me for me but I've only been talking with him for like 4 days I barely know him and we do text some raunchy stuff but I just can't tell if he is really who he says he is. He did send me a picture and he seems really nice but I visit NY a lot and hes like next time u visit we can hook up. How can I tell if he's for real or not?!?!?

N91 agony auntDo you not realise the majority of people who use internet chat rooms aren't who they say they are? Have you ever seen the show 'To catch a predator'?? Chatrooms are a great place for paedophiles and perverts to get their rocks off and pretend to be somebody they're not, because you can't see them.

For all you know, I could be bill gates giving you this advice.

What kind of normal 21 year old would be attracted to a 16 year old? And why would his first topic of conversation be sexually related? I'm not sure of the laws in the US, but isn't 16 underage? Making him a paedophile if you guys were to 'hook up'?

Stay out of chat rooms and hang out with your own friends, who you know are who they say they are - It's scary that people don't have more sense when it comes to the internet...

Deagan agony auntUs older folks will gladly answer this for you. He is real, but he is not 21, he's not interested in you as a person, he is perverted, and he is a very immature person. Stay away.

How can you say you like this person and you guys hit it off through an online chat? You've never met him before! How can you hit it off well when you are talking about sex?

Let me make this very clear, that sort of 21 year old is not interested in a 16 year old. What are you doing on online chats with strangers anyway? That is very dangerous. You need to be hanging out and talking to people YOUR AGE in your TOWN.

A female reader, Tisha-1 United States +, writes (8 February 2012):

Tisha-1 agony auntAsk him to talk to your parents. That will tell you if he's for real or not.

My bet is he's about 43 years old, overweight, smelly and hairy. He probably still is in the chat rooms looking for the next teenage girl he can find to chat dirty with and you are just one in a long line of conquests.

Cut all contact with him and tell your parents. You don't need an old fat stalker tracking your moves for the next few years.

You've been set up by a guy who does this a lot. Sorry. Get smart!

A reader, anonymous, writes (8 February 2012):

I tell this story to everyone who chats on-line to people...it just goes to show that people can be anyone they like on-line.

When I was 15/16 I was friends with two sisters Dion & Becky,Becky was the youngest at 14,Dion 16.

They both got new fones for Xmas & started using chat rooms on them to chat to people.

Dion started chatting to some guy only to discover it was in fact a boy she had a crush on.

They swapped numbers & begun texting daily.

However Dion & myself got drunk one night & Becky said she smelt it off Dion's breath & that's how she knew.

After another few weeks & more strange coinsidinces of Becky finding out things about Dion that she hadn't told her,Becky turned round & said

"How's things with Dave?"

"Yeah fine, not spoke in a few days hope he's ok"

"I know he's ok"

"How?"

"Is he on-line just now?"

"NO!"

"Am I Dion?"

"Yes"

And the penny had finally dropped...Becky was infact Dave.

She'd done it coz she was so concerned about her big sister giving out her number to strangers she wanted to show her how silly she'd been.

You wouldn't give you'r number to a stranger on the street why do it with someone you met on-line?!
