reader, anonymous, writes (10 March 2008): We cannot stop people acting and behaving in such a way, so stopping people finishing with us is totally impossible and out of our reach. You have to accept that a person will do just what they want, but if i was you i would take the chance away from him, i would dump him. Why do you think he will dump you before your birthday? I take it that you are both the same age. You should be into this heavy stuff at your age anyway, so stop whittling and get out there and enjoy your youth!!

 Assuming your boyfriend is around your age it is hardly uncommon for guys to be very short on cash. Perhaps this embarrasses him. Why not tell him that all you really, really want for your birthday is a big hug and kiss. Perhaps then he won't feel like he needs to cover his financial situation by breaking up with you.
