I think i have very low self esteem and im sick of being in denial.

Hello everyone, ill get straight to the point. lets say that someone compliments me for doing a good thing or achieving something. Most people would take this well and it would make them happy but when i get compliments i almost always feel completely unworthy and for a while after that i feel really awfull, like i deserve punishment. The odd thing is that when someone slags me off or insults me i generally just shrug it off, depending on what mood im in but i never feel as bad as i do when i get compliments.

for so long i have been telling myself, "im happy, im fine, im a great person" but all of this is complete nonsense. I really have never felt that way, it just helps me cope with these feelings of worthlessness.

It seems that i feel very lonely when these feelings of unworthyness happen, at the time i just want someone to talk to but i have never found a person i can be 100% honest with. I cannot relate to my family at all, but i have no real problems with my family so thats ok.

basically i am trying to say that i cant take a compliment but i really mean it, i really cant take a compliment. The bigger the compliment the worse the feeling.

sorry to go on but i guess that writing all this helps me get all this out anyway. I dont want to be in denial anymore, i guess the question i am asking is. How can i feel good about myself? any ideas?

thank you so much

This pesamistic attitude is a symptom of depression.

Also the feelings of wanting to be punished could be a symptom too.

It sounds like you could have a very very mild case of it, so I am not going to tell you to go to the doctors and get put on mind numbing drugs - although if you get so bad that you are wanting to self harm, then do go.

As you say, you have no real problems in life so this is purely a chemicals in your brain thing. You need to flood your brain with feel good hormones to get rid of them.

Improve your diet, take multi-vitamins if you are not into eating lots of fruit and veg and whole grain stuff. But try asking for brown instead of white bread and little things.

Exercise! Go and join a boxing club and punch the hell out of a punch bag. Go running, do something that makes you feel the burn in your muscles, because when your muscles start to hurt your body floods your system with endorphins to make you feel good.

Yes it will hurt the next day, so take a day for your muscles to re-grow and then head out again. Being a bloke, if you do some weights and see your arms and shoulders bulk up, then this may also give you a bit of a boost.

Good Luck!! xx
