How can I stop being so shy around people my own age?

A female United Kingdom age 30-35, anonymous writes:

so, i wasnt sure what site to post my question on but i decided this one was the best cos i know theres a lot of people on here and someone has to be able to relate to my problem somehow. so any help you can offer please. thanks:)

my problem is, im pretty quiet. at home i am really loud and confident and around my friends but at school i find it really hard to be me. i guess i find it easy to talk to people younger than me or even older then me, but i really struggle talking to people my age. i always feel like i dont fit in, even though i seem to, and when it comes to being around people i dont normally speak to i really struggle getting words out. and its not that i have nothing to say, i just struggle starting conversations. i decided a few months ago that i was fed up with being "the quiet one" and i started being more myself at school and suddenly everything was great, i really enjoyed my days but this only lasted a little while and suddenly i got shy again lol. so if anyone knows how i can be more confident please help:)

thanks again

Just take tiny baby steps- start by raising your hand in class more, then build yourself up to talking to someone new or inviting someone to have lunch with you and your friends. It is very good that you want to break out of your shell- just take small steps to getting there and eventually you'll just do it naturally.
