 It depends on how long the two of you have known each other, being comfortable with someone is something that is generally acquired with time. Yes there are steps you need to take on your own, if your afraid to hold his hand in public, maybe kiss him or have him kiss you in public? or even in private possibly?
It is a thing that the more you do it, the more comfortable you are with it, I was unbelievable shy several years ago, I even had a hard time putting my arm round my gf at a movie, afraid of what other people will think, they might think your lame, they might think this or that. You might get a negative response form your other half? Don't worry, if you want to be comfortable with your other half, you must spend more time together, more time doing things you both like to do, hang out in public, at school. I'm sure that whatever you do (to an extent) your other half will have no issue with you doing, someone might get a bit shy or scared, blush a bit ^_^. But its a process.
Give it time.
