Work relations are different from other social relations in that at work a manager is responcible to get productivity from all his employees. If the manager is strictly work focused he will reward you only for productive behaviour. Unfortunatly for the business humans are social animals. It is likely that your manager feels diferently about your work habits than he does about you socialy. He is rewarding you for one and punishing you for the other. Since this is work if it is your work he is happy with, no problem. On the other hand if he is harping on you about work, he likes you and is trying to help you succede, so he doesn't have to fire you. It can be looked on as a good thing. You have learned a valuable life lesson in either case. There is only about one foot difference between a pat on the back and a kick in the butt.
