A male reader, anonymous, writes (25 May 2009):

Hi there, unfortunately, like Satin said, there is no way for one to lose 3/4 of a pound a day, nor would it'd be good for you! Here's why.

Your (age, sex) basal metabolism rate (BMR) per day would be given by the equation: 14.7 * weight (kg) + 496. Let's assume that's c. 1500, to which one adds physical activities and thermic effect (heat loss). Typically the ratio are the following: BMR (65%), thermic (10%), and physical activities (variable).

So, weight control is largely through diet.

The RDA for energy consumption: 1) carbohydrate 60%, 2) fat 30%, 3) protein 10%. I'd say, cut the fat as much as possible, for each lb. of fat is 3,500 kcal. Your body has 3 anabolic pathways for energy storage and they all lead to the storage of fat when energy is taken in excess, but it's least efficient for your body to convert carbohydrate (sugar, starch) to fat, and incidentally, your body would more readily store them as glycogen than as fat (2/3 in muscle, 1/3 in liver, roughly), which would be readily hydrolyzed within the first hour of moderate/intense exercise till glycogen will have been largely depleted, the body will consume fat as the main fuel.

Diet. So, do not cut the carbohydrate, simply consume more fibers (full-grain cereals; legumes [use digestive enzymes if need be]; vegetables and fruits). Chewing slower, inviting a friend to share a meal might be good ideas to spend munch time. Check the nutrition labels, but don't become obsessed. I'd suggest rather not substitute intake of protein (meat) for carbohydrate, for they are higher in fat percentage (and sat. fat, and cholesterol), depending on the cut, than even your refined stable carbohydrate sources (white rice, refined flour, etc). And of course, avoid pastry: e.g., about 75% of pâte feuilletée's calorie comes from fat.

Further, about 400-600 kcal are consumed by your brain daily, and it takes only glucose, which your body can only derive from carbohydrate (ie, not protein, nor fat). Hence, whenever you feel lightheaded after heavy exercise, coaches often tell you take something sweet immediately!

Exercise. Jogging 5 mph for a 110-lb. person would be about 6.7 kcal/min. Pick brisk walking, or slow jogging for starter, with perhaps spurs of running in between, but I'd think it might be a good idea not to push to the point of having sores the next day, for the acid would need a few days to be reabsorbed, thus, precluding the scheduled exercise. Besides, exercise wouldn't been meaningful if not religiously practiced.

In sum, I'd say that it's a great aspiration for you to be serious about weight management, but it'll take time, and this applies to all of us: which means, most of all, practicing good dietary discipline.

Please take the best of care,

James

A female reader, asian tealeaf Canada +, writes (23 May 2009):

asian tealeaf agony auntrule of thumb. treat ur stomach like a big container. imagine it partitioned into 3 parts. fill it 1/3 water, 1/3 food and 1/3 air. this is one of the best ways to start. then, a low carb diet should be followed. carbs dont break down properly and thus are turned into sugars etc. the body stores carbs very fast and very easily. so try to eliminate carbs as much as possible. high protein. protein builds muscle. the body burns protein very fast, and so when u consume protein ur body has to work harder to burn it, thus burning more calories to do so. high fibre. fibre is very important to ur diet. and smaller portions for each meal. eating a lot of fish is very healthy. but, adding condiments like butter, and other saucy things can add up the calories. so keep this to a minimum. and, exercise. it has been found that when u push ur body at hard fast spurts like in cardio, ur heart pumps faster thus ur metabolic rate will increase, and even after finished doing cardio ur body will continue to burn calories. lastly, dont eat after 6 p.m if u can help it. eating later in the day and then sleepingis very bad for u. so eat earlier in the evening and do a little cardio and going to sleep, ur body is still working hard burning calories. but, it also depends on ur genetics, how much u will, ur body type etc. for me, i had 5 kids, im 97 pounds, very very lean and pretty cut. and for myself, i dont have to work out much or even diet to stay this way. i maintain a high protein diet, eat minimal carbs and ride a bike a lot, which helps in my staying trim and fit. drinking a lot of water helps to lube ur joints and also cleanses ur system. drinking teas rich in antioxidants and flavenoids are very good for u. acai berry is also very good for u, in maintaining good over all health. while fruits are good for u, eating or drinking too much fruit juices etc is bad for u. especially orange juice as its high in natural sugars. procesed foods and anything high in sodium should be avoided. water retention can make u think ur overweight, salt will do that. make u bloated etc. once u have eliminated a high sodium intake u wil quickly lose several pounds, all of it water retention. so right there u will have made some incredible headway to losing weight healthy. any questions just send me a pm. goood luck
