How can I let Charity know I really like her?

A male United States age 30-35, anonymous writes:

Alright, so a little back story then I'll get on with it.

I don't get out on dates much (and before anyone says it's all in my head: it's not. Definitely got plenty of confidence in myself and adamant about what I want without being a total narcissistic jerk about it, but I don't trust dating sites either. Haven't been on a date in almost 3 years, in fact).

Anyways, back in February, I liked this girl, Charity (she's about a year or two younger than I), and had planned on asking her out on Valentine's Day as friends. Got a card, personalized it, and actually wrote a song about her with her name cleverly hidden in the lyrics. I'm a bit of a romantic when it comes to trying to serenade a girl with a song. She had a boyfriend then (She's a good person, but her choice in men can be a bit questionable, in my opinion, but I digress), so I backed off.

Anyways, they broke up (she broke it off with him) about 2 months ago. I was still interested, but I kept my distance to let her mend a broken heart, vent, and to offer support if she needed it. I saw her in the parking lot of my workplace about 3 weeks ago (I work at a supermarket, but I was off work that day and doing errands there) as I was getting ready to go back home. Saw her and her friend, yelled to Charity, "Hey there, beautiful! How are you doing?" and essentially small talk from there and plans about what we're doing that weekend. I knew she was going on vacation for a week down in Myrtle Beach starting in the morning after, so I didn't bother asking if she wanted to go out then. Told me to text me, so I did. Sent her a text about 3 weeks ago saying,

"Dear Charity,

I have something to ask of you. To be quite honest, I've been wanting to ask ya for a long time...Dinner and a movie sometime?"

To which she said she would have to see when she was working next (which to me, sounds like a non-committal yes).

What can I text or say to Charity to hint that I really like her or possibly just to break the ice? I don't like to use leetspeak and I don't play "hard to get". (As you can probably guess, I don't go out on dates very much either).

Every website I searched has something like "sign up now or join my mailing list and I'll tell you how to get a girl" or has very little to go on other than stuff like "tease, play hard to get, be mysterious, be unpredictable, and be sexy" (I don't do any of those that early on. I'm just trying to get a girlfriend, not get laid. I use compliments in moderation, but not like they are going out of style. Also, not looking for a quick two-week relationship; I want the real deal.

She does like it whenever I compliment her on something (like once when I told her she looked like Grace Slick from Jefferson Airplane or when I told her she had really beautiful blue eyes) or show genuine interest in something she likes (like when she showed me pictures from her visit, and there's one of her with a celebrity look-alike and another with another celebrity look-alike, and I had really thought she had actually met the real celebrities) and I have told her if she ever needs a guy to talk to, I'm always free and willing to listen.

I did paint a picture of her too (haven't shown it to her yet. I had an extra canvas lying around the house one day and I was feeling inspired.)

ZomBarbie agony auntAwweh your a sweet guy! Okay so I'm gonna be honest right now, I LOVE it when a guy is talking to me and then just ever so casually slips it in there hoping that I won't notice or something. Example: she says something really cool or funny and then you reply "haha! And that is why I like you! -----" and then just start up a new convo! It gets me every time! :)
