A female reader, PsyCookie United States +, writes (21 July 2008):

PsyCookie agony auntWhen a person is depressed, there are certain behavioral changes that some people that know you would notice, like family and friends. This are subtle changes, but are noticeable in this people and will create a sense of worryness in them. At first, those changes will be ignored or not noticed that much, but after some time, those people would infer that you may be depressed or really bothered by something and will try to take action or wait for you to take it.

But, what are you trying to accomplish with her knowing? What do you want her to do? Do you want her to flatter you?

Now, if you do want her to help you feel better, then tell her! Since you have wanted her to see that your depressed, then it means that she holds something special to you, like really good friendship.

Now, if she suspects something, she will probably wait for YOU to tell her. She may feel that if she pressures you to tell her what's wrong, then she may think that you will get mad at her and probably will not tell her anything since this is a common reaction with people. Go ahead and tell her if you think she will help you. If she's a good friend, then don't be afraid of tellin her this because she will understand you and will likely do her best to help you.

Now, if you think she's not a good friend, then why you want her to know?
