He is upset with how his life is right now with working and lack of money? How can I help and support him?

And what is the differance between emotionally connected and mentally connected? Because he told me that he connects with me emotionally but not yet connects with me mentally?

Try finding was to make the money go further. Also make sure he doesn't feel pressured into having to spend money on you. He might feel down because he doesn't have money to take the two of you out or buy you things.

Him saying your not mentally connected would seem to me to mean that he feels you two don't always connect with the same thoughts and ideas. A meeting of the minds. Why don't you ask him what the difference is because you want to be mentally connected. Also ask him how you can support him.
