He stopped going to the gym and he rarely rides his bike which he loved to do he also complains about him getting fat. I want to help him feel better about himself and get him back to loving his life. I can sense that he is in a rut/slump. I want to help...how can I help him?

First off, ask him what's bothering him, a change in behaviour like this is often due to something being on the persons mind and bothering them.
It could also simply be down to age (I'm assuming he's in your age bracket) as from 16-20 it's very common to lack self confidence and be unhappy with how you look to the extent where it effects your actions (less excercise etc).
You could also try doing things he used to do, together. Ask him to come for a run with you or a bike ride. Compliments work with boys just as much with girls too. Randomly tell him "you look nice in that top", "you're sooo cute when you do that face", "your eyes look amazing today" etc. This can really help mood and boost self image
hope I helped =)
