It's all a matter of *where* you bite. You used the pronoun "them" and "they" so I'm going to give you advice for both genders.
For a girl, the biting has to be very gentle and not in a place that is conspicuous, like the upper neck, face, or some place where she's going to have to answer some questions in public. Also, the breasts/nipples are OUT for biting. Teeth HURT! The lower neck and stomach and inner arms are great places.
For a guy, think about where YOU like to be bitten. The pecs/chest area (minus nipple, unless you want to SOFTLY graze your teeth against it) are great...so is his neck as you bury your fingers into his hair while you're doing it. It's all about the feeling of *barely* restrained control. You won't hurt him if you don't bite him like you're eating corn on the cob or something.
Good luck!

I don't really think you have anything to worry about. Just start kissing on the neck or else where and then gently suck and lick. If your partner is enjoying it you can be more forceful and bite gently and suck harder. Although honestly I've always enjoying the licking more than the sucking. If your partner says something then stop otherwise you're fine.
Good Luck! :)
