Some times people sell jewellery or stuff in schools (at least where I live). Perhaps you can ask him "Would you like to give this to your girl"... and he might tell you something like "I don't have a girlfriend" or "Oh, I already got her something...". That way you would save face. It doesn't have to be with jewellery. Anything that gives you a "legitimate" reason to ask whether he has a girlfriend might work.
Sometimes you can also ask a friend of a friend...
