A female United Kingdom age 30-35, anonymous writes:

I have just recently made a doctor's apointment regarding depression. Nearly every day I feel like crap. There are some influences like friends, school and stuff but my life is rubbish, it gets me really down and I feel like I have nothing to live for. A family friend died recently and all of my family friends think it's really selfish that he killed himself and left his kids. What do you think this is? Why am I feeling this way? like a hormonal imbalance or depression? I am not being melor-dramatic btw (:

A reader, anonymous, writes (6 January 2009):

Depression is when for over a period of time such as more than a couple of weeks you have lost interest in things you used to like to do. You may have an impending sense of doom or panic or anxiety about some unknown thing....you may have weight changes either eating a lot or very little at all. You may wake early in the morning before you are ready and or have difficulty sleeping. Your thoughts could be abuot harming yourself or tapes could be running through your head about how life is not good or going to get any better.

Having lost a friend to suicide is pretty devestating at your age depending on how close you were to this person. You also could be experiencing grief for the first time. It is a process that people go through when they grieve and sadness is part of that process.

Your family making judgements about your friend being selfish for leaving his kids is just their way of making some sense out of a senseless act and makes them feel stronger for having made different choices in their lives. What they dont understand about suicide however is that the person killing themselves is not thinking about anything other than how horrible they feel, how they are unable to go on and they think people would be better off without them, and suicide can be done in a rash moment during the worst day of that person's life, never giving themselves the chance for that mood to lift. It is a poor decision based on emotion, not logic and what your friends and family are doing by judging him for his act is trying to put logic to a decision that was an emotional one. It can't be done.

Tell your doctor how you are feeling and get some help.

A male reader, yum yum Switzerland +, writes (6 January 2009):

yum yum agony auntIt could be a phase, many teenagers can have such a phase however it should not last for weeks or months. Try and find a new activity of some sort. Its good that you are going to see a doctor for this he can give you some good advise. However beware of anti-depressants they can have side effects, try and get over it in a natural way however this is not up to me to decide. I also had a phase were I was feelings like crap, however eventually I got over it. I refused to take anti-depressants because I did not want to be like a zombie, since I believe those tablets make people lose many of their emotions and creative thoughts.

Eventually I got over my depression because I found some new activities and did other things which subsequently changed the way I was feeling. However for some people who feel very bad for an indefinite period and who cannot get back on track with a natural way, I would presume that he/she would need anti-depressants. Another reason for taking anti-depressants could be a chemical imbalance.

I hope my advise was helpful. Take care!
