A female reader, anonymous, writes (17 July 2010):

Yes, it is a code among friends, never go out with their ex, especially if your friend has any feelings about it at all. Harsh as it may sound, you don't need to be dating this guy's best friend.

You don't have to have a boyfriend at all you know, you can try to become friends with both these guys and make ammends to the one who apparantly thinks you were mean to him. Find out why, and if you were, apologize and then move on with your life with your head held high. Learn from your mistakes and go on with your day.

You are a kid, go have some fun and stop agonizing over some boy, he's not worth it.

I don't think he would go out with you anyway. He'd see it as stabbing his friend in the back. This is one you need to let go. Nothing will come of it. You can try to prove it all you like, but if he's a good friend, he won't go out with his best friend's ex.
