 I agree with CD, the best kinds of compliments are actually true. Even if it's really little (i.e. wow, you've got great hands.), it's still always so nice to hear.
What I like to hear most, however, is that I smell nice. If a guy tells me I smell really great and then leans in a little and breaths in... I just melt.

 I like compliments on my outfit. Women put a lot of effort into looking good, especially for a first date and its like the ultimate reward for all the hard work if you just say "Wow, you look gorgeous" Say that as soon as you say the first hello and you are sooo in there mate! lol Or if she's wearing some sort of bright colour "that colour really brings out your eyes"
Compliments on the hair also, no doubt she'd spend ages doing that too.
Ask her what she likes doing in her spare time, or if she's seen any movies lately, stuff like that.

reader, anonymous, writes (28 February 2007): Hey if a guy tells me I have amazing cheekbones I would automatically think he’s 1- gay 2- a photogrephor of some sort 3- weird 4- gay LOL. I do however agree w/CD on it has to be ovious or she won’t believe you. I just got the BEST one today… His guy says to me, “so what kind of work do you do besides being a model?” I loved it & even though it’s a tad coney I couldn’t stop laughing/giggling and we hit it off. Mind you this was today at lunch time just a few hours ago & I’m still thinking ‘bout it. Beautiful eyes is always a good one, or (& this is only if she does smell good) wow that scent you have on is great, what is it? Etc. Good luck mate!~

 The best kind of compliments are the true ones. Girls are insecure beasts! You need to pick up on something that is really obvious because then she will trust you that it's true, just something small like you have such pretty eyes or wow, your cheekbones are amazing.
