reader, anonymous, writes (21 January 2008): What he's like around his friends is normal - boys are often like that. He wants to look cool, and it's not seen as being cool if he's with a girl.
Backing off when you try to take the relationship further...that also is pretty normal; he could just be scared (most boys are cowards!).
But it's up to you - the main thing to ask yourself is if you have fun when you're alone together. That's when he's more likely to be himself. Are you happy with him then? If not, then maybe you're right in wanting to move on.

 If you don't like his manners, you can talk to him and if he does not want to change, then what's holding you back?
If you can accept him, then when his friends are there, leave them and do your own thing.
