A female United States age 30-35, *eShell writes:

Hi! I'm a freshman in college and in my Psychology class I had to choose a topic for my paper. I chose OCD (Obsessive Compulsive Disorder)out of a list of similar topics. It has to be in APA format. Anyways I know what OCD is, but I have no idea on what to exactly say in this paper. I asked the teacher and he said in the norm, but I need a little bit more of an explanation. I'm just a tad lost... so if anyone has any helping hints or suggestions I'd greatly appreciate them!

A male reader, anonymous, writes (30 October 2011):

APA format is a format for (1) citations of academic work and (2) layout of academic papers. It is one of several such formats, with the American Psychological Association format being most common in the social sciences.

Your institution's library or your faculty's student academic assistance will have a handout which explains what is expected. Many libraries run orientation programs where the format is explained, the use of academic abstract and full text databases of publications explored and so on.

You should visit your library urgently. There will be a "reference desk" or similar -- approach them. They will point out the pamphlets, guides and how to book an orientation session.

You might want to keep your eyes open for learning opportunities in the future, as you probably had sessions on citations, assignment requirements and publication databases slip by you unnoticed at the beginning of the semester. Training on citations is often promoted as avoidance of academic misconduct (as failing to cite someone else's argument is to claim that their work is yours). Also, if you are offered the OneNote software and training, then grab it, as it's very useful for citation management.

Best wishes for your studies.

chigirl agony auntRead up about it. Avoid Wikipedia. Find some reliable sources, like for example your books from your compendium.

I don't know what APA format is, but I'm sure you know what it is, and how to make a paper by this format.

I'm sure you've also written papers before in your life? If not, you start with an introduction, then the middle section where you get into it all, and the write a conclusion.

Look for archives of previous papers written on the topic to get inspiration for the build up of your own.

Never use plagiarism. Always re-write sentences, make your own sentences, and use references for absolutely everything you have gotten from anywhere else outside of your head.

You can do it. It's not a biggie, you're just recapping what OCD is, not researching it.

Ima FreAk! agony auntHiyaaaa,

I LOVEEEEEEEEEEEEEE PSYCHOLOGY!!!! So I can help you with that!

What you could write in this paper is firstly what is it you know with the quirky fun introduction with an explaination of OCD.

Then you could write about symptoms of it and link to any psychologically explaination of OCD like for example psychodynamic approach says that upbringing can cause OCD like a traumatic experience (kinda like Emma on Glee where she fell into I damnn! I can't remember but she fell into something so that's why she had OCD and plus she's ginger so her parents use to make her clean the table when she goes into a restaurant coz ginger people didn't sit in it).

Lastly you could write about treatments and how it affects people's life is can they reall get over OCD.

Hope my advice helps!

Good luck on your paper! And I would love an update of how you did!

Lots of love,

Ima FreAk!

x

well without knowing the brief of the paper its hard to say what you need to write. do you have to look up journal articles? that discuss the possible reasons for OCD, how people get over an OCD or can they?

things like this is what i would say you will probably need to discuss

hope this can be of some help
